New 2012 changes to OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200) are bringing the U.S. into alignment with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS), improving safety and health protections for America's workers. These new revisions to OSHA's current Hazard Communication Standard, the GHS is expected to prevent injuries and illnesses, save lives and improve trade conditions for chemical manufacturers. The Hazard Communication Standard in 1983 gave the workers the ‘right to know,' but the new Globally Harmonized System gives workers the ‘right to understand.' The new Hazard Communication Standard still requires chemical manufacturers and importers to evaluate the chemicals they produce or import and provide hazard information to employers and workers by putting labels on containers and preparing safety data sheets. However, the old standard allowed chemical manufacturers and importers to convey hazard information on labels and material safety data sheets in whatever format they chose. The modified standard provides a single set of harmonized criteria for classifying chemicals according to their health and physical hazards and specifies hazard communication elements for labeling and safety data sheets. Learn MoreCranes are used in many different settings including: the transport industry for loading and unloading freight; the manufacturing industry for moving, lifting and lowering equipment and parts; and in the construction industry for moving materials to various locations at the work site. Generally the items being lifted are heavy and beyond the capability of being moved by human strength alone. For this reason, the crane has become a vital piece of equipment in all industries. The crane operator needs the help of many others to ensure the load is rigged, lifted, moved and landed safely. The operator is not always able to see the load being moved, the area surrounding the route of the move and/or the landing area. For this reason the services of a signal person are generally required. A signal person is a vital part of crane operations and provides signals to guide the crane operator as the load is moved. While there are different options available for signal personnel to communicate with the crane operator, this training program will focus on hand signals which is the most common method used. Learn MoreMany workplaces contain spaces that are considered “confined” because their configurations hinder the activities of employees who must enter, work in, and exit them. A confined space has limited or restricted means for entry or exit, and it is not designed for continuous employee occupancy. Confined spaces include, but are not limited to underground vaults, tanks, storage bins, manholes, pits, silos, process vessels, and pipelines. OSHA uses the term “permit-required confined space” (permit space) to describe a confined space that has one or more of the following characteristics: contains or has the potential to contain a hazardous atmosphere; contains a material that has the potential to engulf an entrant; has walls that converge inward or floors that slope downward and taper into a smaller area which could trap or asphyxiate an entrant; or contains any other recognized safety or health hazard, such as unguarded machinery, exposed live wires, or heat stress. According to data collected by the U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL), Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) program, fatal injuries in confined spaces fluctuated from a low of 81 in 1998 to a high of 100 in 2000 during the five-year period, averaging 92 fatalities per year. Learn MoreToday much of the work we do involves computers, whether it's in the warehouse or in the accounting department. And just like any other type of equipment, we need to know what potential problems may be involved in working with computers as well as how to use computers safely. NSC's training products on “Computer Workstation Safety” review the safe use of computers, and offer practical solutions to many potential problems. Topics covered in these products include:
Learn MoreIn today's work environments, compressed gas is used for many things… refrigeration… welding… heating… and a number of other functions. Compressed gas can be dangerous, and employees who work with them need to know how to handle them properly. NSC's training products on “Compressed Gas Cylinders” provide the information employees need to handle and transport these potentially volatile storage containers. Topics covered in these products include:
Learn MoreEvery day someone is injured on a job, becomes ill from a work related hazard or is fatally wounded while at work. Many times these situations are attributed to and called an unfortunate “accident”. The reality is most, if not all, workplace injuries, illnesses and deaths could be avoided by providing a true safety culture. While they may be unplanned and unwanted, accidents are generally not unavoidable. This training program will look at ways to avoid these so called “accidents” and help you create a safer and healthier workplace. National Safety Compliance has developed this training video and materials to assist employers in training their workers about Incident Investigation.
Learn MoreWorkers in many different occupations are at risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens, including Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV/AIDS. This exposure may be through needlesticks, sharps injuries, mucous membranes, and skin exposures. First aid team members, housekeeping personnel in some settings, and nurses are examples of workers who may be at risk of exposure. Workers and employers are urged to take advantage of available engineering controls and work practices to prevent exposure to blood and other body fluids. In 1991, OSHA issued the Bloodborne Pathogens Standard to protect workers from this risk of exposure. In 2001, in response to the Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act, OSHA revised the Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, 29 CFR 1910.1030. The revised standard clarifies the need for employers to select safer needle devices and to involve employees in identifying and choosing these devices. The updated standard also requires employers to maintain a log of injuries from contaminated sharps. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration promulgates the standard to eliminate or minimize occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens. OSHA has made a determination that employees face a significant health risk as the result of occupational exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials because they may contain bloodborne pathogens. The Agency further concludes that this exposure can be minimized or eliminated using a combination of engineering and work practice controls, personal protective clothing and equipment, training, medical surveillance, Hepatitis B vaccination, signs and labels, and other provisions. This training program has been filmed for employees who work in a healthcare environment. We have produced a separate training program for employees who do not work in the healthcare industry (item #11-108). Learn MoreIn today’s world, being a manager or supervisor can sometimes be stressful and difficult. You must balance your responsibilities to the organization for which you work and the employees you supervise. Additionally, you must make sure the workplace is safe for all by helping create, implement and enforce safety rules and procedures. An area where this balancing act has become increasingly important involves the use of drugs and alcohol by employees. Substance abuse has become a serious problem not only affecting the workplace, but the whole fabric of the organization. Substance abuse can hinder an employee’s ability to perform their job duties safely, accurately and efficiently. When drug or alcohol use impacts job performance, it becomes a supervisory concern with possible consequences for everyone in the workplace. Learn MoreAlcohol abuse and the use of illegal drugs has become a major problem in the workplace. Substance abuse can not only hinder an employee’s ability to perform their job duties safely, accurately and efficiently, but can lead to serious consequences. According to the Department of Labor, nearly three quarters of those who use illegal drugs also work and one in every ten people in the U.S. has an alcohol problem. When people who abuse drugs and alcohol come to work, they bring with them their substance abuse problems. This is an accident waiting to happen. Often they even engage in the use of various substances while at work or during lunch or other breaks. Alcohol and drug abuse affects not only the employee but everyone around them. Workplace drug and alcohol abuse is a very serious problem for everyone.
